New Baby Quilt..and info on Commission Quilts?

A close friend of mine just had a sweet baby girl.. Her name is Setita and she is the cutest thing. She is Half Aussie and Half Tongan.. So I have started making her this quilt...
Just a few progress pictures to share with you....
My inspiration came from Kate and all her amazing Stack and Slash Quilts..
I'm just finishing off the binding and I will show you full pictures when I'm done...

Hey it has got me thinking though... Would anyone be interested in Commission Quilts?? Would any body like me to make a quilt for you?? I'm not sure how it would all work yet.. If anyone has had any experience with Commission Quilts I would love some insight..
Thanks everyone.. xx

  4. I've done one commissioned quilt. My customer was a dream, but I didn't charge enough. I broke even, so that part was good. Now, I know a lot more and would charge more, but try to still be fair.

    1. Hi Jan,
It is said that one should charge three times what the cost of the article was to make.

  5. Yes be fair as Jan has said, but don't sell yourself short. I, myself, am trying to get some more clientele for commission quilts. Maybe we can feed off of one another once in awhile as to what works;)

  7. Such a cute quilt. I like the hand quilting. That is my next thing to tackle. It always looks so good on your quilts.

  9. beautiful. how do you do the hand quilting, exactly? the idea of using a hoop just seems unbearable, lol.

  10. Love this quilt! I really like the second picture, where the block kind of looks like a Polaroid, would be a great modern way to do a memory quilt!

  12. I've done a few commissioned quilts. Your pretty much selling your style. If they like your blog and photos of previous quilts, they usually go with what ever you say. I e-mailed some photos of fabric samples and the pattern was pretty much up to me.

  17. Bec, making commission quilts can be very rewarding. My advice is to be honest with yourself and your customer about how much time you need to complete the project and make a realistic financial estimate of what your time is worth. I have my customers pay for the fabric/batting in advance and pay me for my time (based on an hourly rate that I estimate prior to starting the project), once I hand over the goods. You could approach it a couple of ways, presenting drawn design options for their approval, or getting their permission to design something on your own in their color preferences. It has been my experience that you are more likely to work on, and complete, a project that suits your individual quilting style! I really find it hard to work with colours and fabrics I don't care for, so avoid projects like that! Good luck!

  22. My one piece of advice on commission quilts is to be sure you're very clear in the beginning about what your price covers. If additions or changes are made, or the quilting style changed to something more difficult, or any other changes, those should be additional and the customer needs to be aware of it at the outset. Those are the biggest problems I've run into when I've done commission quilts, and it's cost me money most of the time. So just set out a very distinct list - they provide fabric and batting, or you do; design choice; quilting style; time-line (in case they decide they need it early!). You'll avoid a lot of problems this way.

And I absolutely love your baby quilt!! So adorable. I'm a big fan of Kate's stack-and-slash method, too!
